Analyzing HRS data, Christine Cigolle and Caroline Blaum found that medical interventions for retirees with diabetes increased survival rates when patients self-managed their condition and lived long enough for the benefits to set in. Their study, published in the [April 2012 *Journals of Gerontology*](http://biomedgerontology.oxfordjournals.org/content/early/2012/04/06/gerona.gls095.abstract), suggests that older adults can benefit from interventions to prevent or slow the emergence of diabetes complications such as retinopathy, neuropathy, and cardiomyopathy.
