Mission Impossible: Why Women Cannot Avoid Backlash
Motivated by prior work on gender differences relating to labor market outcomes, this paper investigates beliefs about the social acceptability of various behaviors of men and women. While men face disapproval for many behaviors, it is typically clear which stereotypical behavior will result in societal approval. For example, individuals expect that society largely approves of men being leaders, competitive, assertive, confident, ambitious, risk-taking, keen to negotiate, and good at self-promotion. By contrast, individuals expect that women are more likely to face a “mission impossible” situation in which it is difficult to act in a way that results in strong levels of societal approval. There is more disagreement about how society views women who are leaders or not, competitive or not, assertive or not, confident or not, ambitious or not, risk-taking or not, keen to negotiate or not, and good at self-promotion or not.
Christine Exley is an Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Michigan. She is an experimental economist with work that focuses on the drivers of inequality, gender, discrimination, and prosocial behavior (or the lack thereof). She earned her PhD in economics from Stanford University, and she was previously an Associate Professor at Harvard Business School.
