Examining the impacts of abortion restrictions in Ohio and leveraging research for policy change
Ohio enforces dozens of non-evidenced-based laws that regulate abortion care. Many of these laws intersect to create barriers to abortion for the thousands of people who have an abortion in Ohio each year. Several laws forced pregnant people to have at least two in-person health care appointments to have an abortion, separated by a 24-hour waiting period.
In this Brown Bag talk presented to the University of Michigan Population Studies Center on Feb. 17, 2025, Alison Norris shares evidence of the impact of Ohio’s waiting period and two-appointment requirements on abortion seekers in Ohio, including: 1) significant delay in abortion care (well beyond 24 hours); 2) increased psychosocial costs and delay emotional resolution; 3) increased financial costs and logistical challenges; 4) constrained patient decision making; 5) conflict with evidence-based medicine. To contextualize these research findings in the current policy environment, she shares how these research findings were used by litigators, and how a judicial decision resulted in a temporary injunction against these laws, lifting these restrictions in Ohio.
Dr. Alison Norris is an epidemiologist and a medical doctor who studies sexual and reproductive health with a goal to support reproductive autonomy, excellent reproductive health outcomes and prevention of sexually transmitted infections. She has a particular interest in understanding how policy, endemic disease, social norms, demographic factors, and cultural and institutional structures influence health and disease.
