PSC Brown Bag Seminar: Nadia Diamond-Smith

PSC’s Brown Bag seminar series typically convenes Mondays at noon, at ISR Thompson Room 1430, and on Zoom.

Nadia Diamond-Smith of UCSF joins us Feb. 3, 2025

Approaches and barriers to improving the health and empowerment of young, newly married women in South Asia

Young, newly married women in South Asia are often at the lowest status in their household due to the still common practice of arranged marriage and co-residence. These women are also often left out of health programming, which focuses on pregnant and adolescent women. Young newly married women may face pressure to, or want to, have children early, increasing the need to improve their health, especially related to nutritional status. At the same time, preferences and desires for timing of the first birth are changing, and young married women, and their husbands, may wish to delay the first birth, yet often do not have the knowledge, access or agency to do so. This talk will discuss findings from a longitudinal study with newly married women in Nepal, followed by the design and pilot of a group, household level empowerment and health intervention for newly married women, their husbands and mothers-in-law in Nepal. We will then discuss two ongoing RCTs of different versions of this pilot, one focused on anemia in Nepal and the other on avoiding unintended pregnancies in Rajasthan, India

Nadia Diamond-Smith an Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatics and Institute for Global health Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). She studies the intersection between women’s empowerment and reproductive and maternal health, mostly in South Asia.  She applies a gender lens to research, intervention development and evaluation projects, using mixed methods. Dr. Diamond-Smith has a PhD in the Population, Family and Reproductive Health Department at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and an MSc from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in Sexual and Reproductive health Research
