This research will provide the first evidence on the magnitude and impact of the mismeasurement of race in administrative criminal justice records. The analysis will advance our understanding of the accuracy of widely used statistical reporting on the composition of criminal justice caseloads. This will help to inform the fields understanding of the true nature of racial disparities in the justice system. Additionally, measuring outcomes of individuals will inform our understanding of the consequences of mis-recording racial/ethnic information of individuals on various outcomes (e.g., sentencing, socioeconomic outcomes). Finally, exploring potential causes will help to understand the policies and contextual factors that contribute to mismeasurement, and thus inform strategies to remedy the issue.
