DESCRIPTION:Matt Hall ( https://publicpolicy.cornell.edu/people/matthew-hall/ ) of Cornell University (Sociology/Policy) joins us Dec. 7 to present: The Social Ecology of Multiracial Formation: Local Peers and the Racial Identification of Multiracial AmericansThe rise of multiracial Americans is one of the most defining features of the emerging U.S. racial order. Its significance, however, is not simply demographic: because they are situated across established ethnoracial boundaries, they reveal how those boundaries are formed, recognized, and stabilized. This study examines whether childhood peer ecologies shape the multiracial children’s racial identities into adulthood. Using linked full-count Census microdata from 2000, 2010, and 2020, we estimate the effects of local peer composition among children of Black–White, Asian–White, and AIAN–White, and Hispanic/non-Hispanic parentage. Our design exploits grade-to-grade fluctuations in local racial compositions within school districts to separate peer exposure from family sorting across communities. Across all four boundaries, exposure to minoritized peers increases later identification with the minoritized side, while exposure to same-background multiracial peers increases multiracial identification. These shifts come largely from each boundary’s historical default and often persist into adulthood.
